SPOT ALERT 9-1-1: Use this function In the event of a life threatening or other critical emergency to notify emergency services of your exact location and that you need assistance. The GEOS International Emergency Response Center alerts the appropriate agencies worldwide – for example contacting 9-1-1 responders in North America and 1-1-2 responders in Europe.
SPOT How It Works: Once activated, SPOT will acquire its exact coordinates from the GPS network, and send that location along with a distress message to a GEOS International Emergency Response Center every five minutes until cancelled. The Emergency Response Center notifies the appropriate emergency responders based on your location and personal information – which may include local police, highway patrol, the Coast Guard, our country’s embassy or consulate, or other emergency response or search and rescue teams – as well as notifying your emergency contact person(s) about the receipt of a distress signal.
Even if SPOT cannot acquire its location from the GPS network it will still attempt to send a distress signal – without exact location – to the Emergency Response Center, which will still notify your contacts of the signal and continue to monitor the network for further messages.
SPOT is designed for maximum reliability. Spot performs a self-diagnostic test each time it is powered on. Additionally, Spot strongly recommends that you send and verify an OK/Check message each time before use. This allows you to evaluate your entire messaging system, from the operational condition of the messenger to the readiness of those you’ve chosen to notify of your messages.

SPOT and Les Stroud Partner on Survival Education
SPOT Inc and outdoor survival expert Les Stroud, host and producer of Survivorman have partnered to educate outdoors enthusiasts and others on the benefits of the SPOT Satellite Messenger.
Canadian born outdoor adventurer, filmmaker and musician, Stroud is best known for his highly acclaimed international television survival show, Survivorman. Stroud has more than 20 years experience as a naturalist and outdoor adventurer and instructor in survival, white water paddling, sea kayaking, hiking, dog sledding and winter travel.
"I have been in almost every situation imaginable across the globe and no matter your experience, things can happen and you need to be prepared," says Les. "Whether you are 50 miles deep in harsh backcountry or stranded roadside in a remote location when your car fails, SPOT offers emergency assistance and a way to check in with others when and where its needed."
SPOT has launched an awareness campaign featuring Stroud beginning in mid December. Stroud is educating others about SPOT through his endorsement in television and radio and personal appearances for 2008 including the annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (Shot) Show in Las Vegas on February 2-5, 2008. Stroud will be featured in an upcoming SPOT television commercial beginning December 10, 2007 and throughout 2008 on networks such as ESPN, CNN and Outdoor Life Network.
